Last week we had a request on the Family Crafts forum about iris folding. As I mentioned then, I did not know a lot about iris folding so I rolled up my sleeves and gave it a try.
For those who have no idea what iris folding is, iris folding is done by arranging and layering strips of paper or even fabric in a spiraled pattern. That spiral pattern resembles the iris of a camera lens and that is how this craft got it's name. Many people use this craft technique to create cards and embellishments for scrapbook pages, but I think the finished iris folded project could simply be framed and hung.
While the finished product looks complicated, I found iris fold... Differentiating Your Brand to Stay Competitive - I recently read a very interesting blog entry by Sarah Graham about the art of setting yourself apart to stay competitive. The entry discusses the retail jewelry industry but it is applicable to all arts and crafts businesses.
Basically, the point is to weather the ebbs and flows in the economy by making sure you offer your customers a product or service they can't easily find elsewhere. Of course, our artistic or handmade craft items are inherently unique, but the emphasis is to increase revenue by aggressively marketing the unique aspect of our products.
This could be as simple as making small changes in your production methods to be able to sell your goods at a slightly lessor price than the competition. Or how about using a hard-to-find component or advanced technique that makes your item scarce and therefore allows you to charge a price higher than market?
... Registering a Copyright - Last July, responding to an inordinate amount of copyright theft of an article I wrote about David Yurman, I finally got around to registering this written work with the United States Copyright Office. Ta Dah! My certificate of registration finally arrived in the mail today.
I was finding this article everywhere, from a jewelry store website in St. Louis to descriptions for David Yurman jewelry being sold on eBay.
Most of the businesses I contacted immediately pulled the article from their website with an apology. Amazingly, the jewelry store in St. Louis only responded after I sent them a cease and desist letter. One of the sellers on eBay defended himself by saying he didn't know he had stolen the article from me since he had copied it from another seller. I guess that's ok?

I rarely subcontract out my arts and crafts photography. The main reason I do it myself is that I'm well, cheap. Hiring a great photographer to shoot your arts and crafts products is very important for some purposes (print ads, catalogs and other promotional material) and not as important for others - if you have a fairly good camera and light tent.
Over the years I've used a few different options for my light tents. Currently I'm using a Photosimile light cube for most of my product photography. However, trolling through the internet, I came across an article on how to build a macro light tent for under $10.
The article is written by photographer Jen Kiaba and her instructions are stel... $25,000 Prize - Call for Photography Entries - If your art or craft is photography and you're interested in a grand prize of $25,000 check out the call for entries for Photography Book Now 2010. Green Day Copyright Infringement - I tend to be a little cranky when it comes to the topic of copyright infringement. When your livelihood depends on your written word or creative designs and you spend hours or days refining them only to have them knocked off, it's extremely upsetting.
Recently, the Green Day band was hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit for allegedly stealing an image called the 'Scream' icon by artist Dereck Seltzer. It was used as a backdrop during their American Idiot concert tour. When Seltzer noticed that the image was being used for promotional materials and concert performances he decided to take legal action against the band.
Some reports I've seen quote the damages at a very reasonable $30,000, which is the value the artist is placing on the use by the band. Amazing (I've seen both images - they are almost identical), Green Day is fighting the charges. Anyone remember Napster? The music industry wasn't too happy when their creative product was being stolen.
